Banners ads have been maligned as ineffective. Several studies have found otherwise, supporting the fact that more and more money is being spent on banner advertising everyday.
Good banner ads will achieve click-through rates of about 2%, roughly the same as what is considered a successful direct mail or "targeted marketing" campaign. The demographic targeting achieved online is, however, far superior and Web banners eliminate the cost of printing and postage. Online ads also allow you to test and adjust in real-time by testing banners under controlled conditions.
Ad banners aren't going to go away soon. Standard size for a full-banner is 468 X 60 pixels. Fractionals are pretty much set by each site depending on their layout and design. Below are just a few of the banners we have created.
